The goal of this course is to introduce the Mbuti people and their distinct artform. Inhabiting the Ituri Rainforest of the North-eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, the Mbutis are known for their rich and extraordinary arts of music and dancing. This course emphasizes on the basic concepts involved in the bark cloth drawings and paintings made by Mbuti people. Learners will be able to understand the unique artistic vitality in the bark cloth paintings that are patterned with eccentric biomorphic motifs and expressionistic linear, twining and fractal designs.
Through this course, learners will be focussing on few painted bark cloths prepared by men and painted by women, which were used as ritual dress for festivals, celebrations and rites of passage, including wedding and funeral ceremonies and puberty initiations. Learners will be able to assess the elaborate process involved in preparing and painting a bark cloth in which Mbuti men prepare the barkcloth from the inner bark of about six different species of trees and women prepare the dyes and paints from a variety of roots, fruits and leaves which they collect from the forest.

With decades of experience working in the fields of education and social anthropological studies, the SEATR team has produced an excellent course curriculum that gives detailed information about the Bark cloth paintings and Mbuti perception of place and impressions that plant and animal life. Moreover, this research team has real-time experiences with several indigenous pygmy groups in the Congo region of Africa. Hence, the team has worked on how such course ideas can be produced, negotiated, and revised over time.

As we lost a couple of years in global pandemic, we are planning for the wide range of tours in this year 2023 to tour indigenous pygmy groups in the Congo region of Africa. The following we are going to plan -
1. Meet with Mbuti people and interview them.
2. Efforts to be taken to meet with leaders of few tribes.
3. Interact with the tribes and get their perspective of the modern Bark cloth paintings.
