This course gives the historical background of the Irulas and provides a detailed account of their practices using medicinal plants. Inhabited in the northern districts of Tamilnadu and scattered around the hilly regions of neighboring states of Kerala, Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh, the Irulas have been using medicinal plants species for many of the health hazards.
This course offers ample information about the Irulas who are specialists in traditional herbal medicine and healing practices. Living in the caves in deep dense forest, the Irulas know that the medicinal plants have been accumulated in many centuries based on different medicinal systems. Generally known as Irula ‘vaidyars’, the Irulas have gained immense practical knowledge about the medicinal plants and have immense practice in traditional healing systems over hundreds of medicinal herbs.
